Art Brokerage: In the 1960s, having spent decades painting European-style landscapes of rural Hong Kong, Chinese artist Luis Chan decided it was time for change. "He felt he was out of date and that he needed to renovate himself," art dealer Johnson Chang recalls the painter saying. Chan, who was already in his 60s, began producing oil and ink works of a kind Hong Kong's art establishment had never seen: dream-like works showing boldly colored human and animal figures in a fantasy universe. Art HK will exhibit about 20 works of the late Mr. Chan, who died in 1995. Drawing on the holdings of collectors and members of the artist's family, it will be one of the biggest public exhibitions of Chan's work. The earliest piece is from the 1940s ??" his Western painting period ??" and the latest from the mid-1980s, when he was in full flower making uniquely trippy pictures.
