WILLIAM TILLYER BIOGRAFIE

b. 1938 William Tillyer was born in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire in 1938. His paintings and watercolors are resolutely nature-driven. They convey direct and often poetic associations between weather and landscape, through broad curvilinear sweeps of pure color, sometimes juxtaposed with hard geometric shapes. Tillyer's work has been exhibited internationally for over two decades and is represented in the Tate Gallery, London, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, among many others. The artist’s re-envisioning of the characteristic qualities of watercolour is a unique contribution to both contemporary art and the tradition of English watercolour, as exemplified by artists such as John Sell Cotman, Alexander Cozens, John Constable and J.M.W. Turner.
